Jose Santos
b. April 26, 1961


Jose Santos began racing in his native Chile before moving to the US in 1984. From 1986 through 1989, Santos was the top money-winning jockey in the US.

Santos is a seven-time winner of the Breeders' Cup races and won the 1999 Belmont Stakes. In 2003, he rode New York-bred Funny Cide to victory in both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes but missed the Triple Crown, finishing third at Belmont.

In 1988, Santos received the Eclipse Award. He also received the 1999 George Woolf Award and the 2003 ESPY Award as the outstanding jockey.

Santos has two children from his first marriage, Jose Ricardo and Sophia. He and his second wife Rita have three daughters, Nadia, Selena and Savannah, and a son, Jose Jr.
